■ TUTORIAL: CAPTURING TO YOUR AVID
Figure 2.38 Adjusting the audio levels with Audio Project settings and the audio tool
Naming the Tape
Name this tape by clicking the Tape Name button under the deck controls. From the
menu that appears, select New Tape. When you do this, a new tape entry will appear;
type the new tape name.
Some caveats that we have already discussed: Use the same name on the video-
tape as you use here. Consider the option of naming the project and the tape number
together to avoid confusion. Thus, Tape 1 would be called Capture Exercise 1. After
you figure out the name that best fits your tape, select the tape icon next to the tape
name in the Tape Name box and click OK.
Setting Points
Now it’s time to play back the tape and create a clip. Because I have no idea what is on
your tape, it’s up to you to select the item to be captured here. One word of warning:
You need to have as much preroll time as possible. In other words, the contents of your
clip need a few seconds or more before the tape begins. This section of tape is known
as the preroll. Having more preroll makes it easier for the deck or camera to cue up to
the edit point.
Go ahead and play back the tape. Click the Mark In button where you want to
start and the Mark Out button where you want the clip to end. There should be no
camera starts or stops in the middle of this clip. In other words, it has to be one con-
tinuous recording without interruption.
Choosing a Drive
Next, choose where to store the media for your clip: Click the Drive Selection icon
, which should show you a list of available drives to
choose from.
