what media is on the drive. This file can be fairly large, depending on how many media

objects are stored on that drive. Therefore, it is recommended that you keep about 20

percent of your drives empty for rendering and media databases. Another good reason

for purchasing more than one drive is that the media database files are smaller, and the

system runs efficiently.

Logging

When using a nonlinear system, you have the choice of capturing all the media that

was lensed for the project or capturing only those you feel are needed. Frankly, it is

better to do the latter. By doing so, you made some choices about what is to be

included in your project, which forces you to make some decisions about what you

will use. More importantly, you’ll end up creating fewer media objects. (Media objects

are what drive your system to play back media.) Too many media objects can slow

the system down.

The Capture tool has a logging option that can be used for this purpose, as

shown in Figure 2.2. When you log your tapes, you are selecting only the material that

is acceptable for the project. After the media is logged, it can be batch captured to a

drive later. This automated function allows for a more precise workflow.

Note: If you are using Xpress Pro with Mojo and are using an external FireWire drive, you need to pur-

chase an additional FireWire card for your computer because the Mojo needs the entire internal FireWire bus

on your computer to work properly.FireWire cards are generally very inexpensive,from around $20–100 (USD)

It is also important to remember that no notebooks work with Mojo,although there is one company that has

released a notebook with multiple buses specifically for this purpose.
