CHAPTER 7: EFFECTS AND TRANSITIONS ■
Motion Effects
A motion effect is an effect that changes the speed at which a clip would normally play.
Xpress Pro can create three distinct flavors of motion effects, described in the following
sections.
Timewarp Effects (Xpress Pro) Timewarp effects are applied to segments in the Time-
line directly from the Effect palette (see Figure 7.1). The rate of motion is determined
by the effect. In other words, a timewarp effect is an effect that has specific motion
speed in specific parts of a chosen clip. It’s an effect with variable motion, but the
determination of when the motion changes pace is dictated by the effect itself.
Freeze Frames Freeze frames are applied to clips in the Source monitor and create a
new clip that must then be edited into the sequence.
Standard Motion Effects Motion effects are applied to clips in the Source
monitor. Each motion effect plays at a consistent speed that is determined by the user or
is fitted to fill a required space. Like freeze frames, after the motion effect has been applied
to the source clip, a new clip is generated and must then be edited into the sequence.
Note: If you’re using Free DV,there aren’t a lot of effects available;then again, the software is free.On
the other hand,Xpress Pro has an awesome 100+ in its palette. There is also a whole separate category of
very powerful effects created by third-party companies called AVX effects. These effects can almost bring
your humble Xpress Pro up to the power of a Symphony.Sadly,AVX effects are not available on Free DV, so you’ll
have to upgrade to gain that capability.
