Considerations Before You Capture

Both Free DV and Xpress Pro have certain system requirements. Although it is true

that some individuals have managed to work with the application without meeting

those requirements, it is not recommended that you do so. Why? Well, both Free DV

and Xpress Pro are pretty elaborate applications. They have evolved from the Media

Composer software developed by Avid, which is rumored to contain the biggest code-

base ever used in a single application. And Avid software can be pretty quirky when

the exact recommendations are not met.

Case in point: the Capture tool, which we will soon be using. I have often had to

troubleshoot systems that refused to capture media properly. These systems would seem

to operate correctly until you pressed the red capture button on the interface. At that

point, either a cryptic error message would appear on-screen, or the system would sit

and do nothing. In every case, the system didn’t meet Avid’s specifications. After the

system was adjusted to meet those specifications, everything worked fine.

System Recommendations

We live in a world of convenience and choices, but it’s really a good idea to stick with

the requirements. An example is the AMD processor, which is not supported. Some

people have had success using these, but Avid will not provide tech support for any sys-

tem that has an AMD. Thanks to the Internet and user forums mentioned below, you

can go online and share with other editors who have tried different configurations.

Free DV

Windows users:

• Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 or 2

• 933 MHz Pentium 3 or any Pentium 4 or Pentium M Processors

• 1 GB system memory (1.5 GB preferred)

• A qualified graphics card (as supported by system vendor); Avid recom-

mends the NVIDIA Quadro4 980 XGL (Windows) or the NVIDIA

QuadroFX 1100

• An IEEE-1394 (FireWire) port or qualified DV In/Out Card (see following)

• 20 GB or larger internal disk drive

• CD or DVD-ROM drive

Mac users:

• Mac OS X 10.3.4, 10.3.5, 10.3.6, 10.3.7, or 10.3.8

• 667 MHz G4 or any G5 (single or dual processor)
