THE CAPTURE TOOL: CAPTURE CONTROLS
The Capture Tool: Capture Controls
There are significant differences between the Capture tool used in Xpress Pro and the
one used in Free DV. Because Free DV is a “free” application, some of the more-
advanced capabilities of capturing are not present. For example, I earlier mentioned
that Free DV has no logging capabilities. Logging isn’t one of the most important
aspects of capturing, nor is it entirely necessary for any project. Therefore, the folks at
Avid left it out of Free DV, primarily to entice you to purchase Xpress Pro. But don’t
feel robbed! The features on Free DV are robust enough to work around all these
shortcomings.
Generally speaking, capture and output are the two things that video editors do
not do well, probably because they are done so little when compared with the amount
of time spent on editing. In some cases, an assistant editor does all of the capturing and
output, which makes these processes even more mysterious to the editor.
Nonetheless, capturing footage is the most important process. If anything goes
wrong at this phase, it can pretty much atrophy from here. Incorrect tape naming,
timecode numbers, and other vital information can be lost.
Before starting the computer, make sure that all the peripherals are connected
and powered up. By peripherals, I mean the videotape deck, speakers, monitors, and
anything else that is connected to the computer. If the deck is not connected, Free
DV/Xpress Pro will not “see” it when you open the Capture tool. Other operational
problems might occur as well. So make sure that everything is running first.
Now you can start up your computer. If this is the first time you are using Free
DV or Xpress Pro, some drivers may load automatically, particularly if you are using a
Windows PC. Windows XP has some internal drivers to load, as well as the ones used
with Free DV/ Xpress Pro.
If you are using Free DV, you’ll see a screen that invites you to explore the
advanced functions of Xpress Pro. If you’re using Xpress Pro, this screen does not
appear. Select Later for now. After the screen clears, you will see a Project screen in a
dark gray window (see Figure 2.16); this is where your project is either created or
selected.
Note: Free DV also does not have the ability to batch capture.Which brings me to a point:There are a lot
of features that are grayed-out in Free DV.This is especially annoying because you see all the features that
Xpress Pro has.I suppose it’s a good selling ploy, but that doesn’t make it any easier to stomach.
