CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING
Converting Log Formats with Avid Log Exchange
Avid Log Exchange (ALE) is a conversion program that allows you to read from the
most common log-creation tools to an Avid-readable log, which can then be imported
into a bin. The ALE program comes with the other installers (such as EDL Manager)
on your Xpress Pro CD.
Avid Log Exchange can convert the following log types:
Avid Log Exchange
ATN (Aaton)
Apple Cinema Tools
CMX EDL
Final Cut Pro
FLX (Flex files, from telecine)
Keyscope
Log Producer
OSC/R
Tab-delimited databases such as those from Filemaker Pro and Excel
ALE outputs ALE, ATN (Aaton), or FLX (flex) files.
You can drop a shortcut or alias of ALE on your desktop and automate input.
ALE will read your log files and convert them to Avid Log Exchange files.
Batch Capturing Using Previously Logged Bins (Xpress Pro Only)
If you already have logged bins and simply need to capture the media, all you have to
do is set the resolutions, assign the correct drives, and tell Xpress Pro what to capture
by selecting the clips in their bin. The system goes into an automatic capturing mode
that can be monitored or, in the case of offline editing, simply set and left to do its
own work.
Before we begin this batch capture, let’s take a look at some of the Batch Cap-
ture settings. To access these settings, click the Settings tab in your Projects window
and select Capture; then select the Batch tab (see Figure 2.36). You can optimize the
batch capture process for speed and for disk space. The first two selections in the Batch
settings allow you to do this. If you choose Optimize For Speed, the system will deter-
mine the fastest way to digitize your footage and proceed accordingly.
For example, if two clips are relatively close to each other on the tape, the sys-
tem can choose to continue capturing between the clips without stopping. Doing this
does waste a little disk space, but it also allows you to finish capturing more quickly. If
you prefer to save disk space and are not in a big hurry, you can choose to optimize for
disk space. Even if two clips are close to each other, the system digitizes only what is
needed.
