CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND DIGITAL CUT
automated fashion. If they are not contiguous, you can edit a new sequence together
and make them that way.
To export multiple frames in a sequence, choose Sequential Files on your Export
Graphic Options menu.
If you are only exporting a portion of your sequence or a clip, be sure to make a
mark in and out at the intended start and finish and then check the Use Marks box in
the export settings; otherwise, the entire piece will export. When you save a sequence
of files, put them in a separate folder. Otherwise, they could dump all over your desk-
top. And a messy desktop makes for sloppy work. Maybe it’s the military kid in me,
but I find this method extremely inefficient.
Exporting files over a network directly to a server or directly to a CD-ROM or
other removable storage medium is not necessarily the best solution if the write speed
to that storage medium or server can’t keep up with how fast Xpress Pro can export.
Instead, export to the fastest drive you can send to. After the export is completed, you
can then transfer the saved files to the removable medium or server.
As you export sequential frames, Xpress Pro will take whatever name you
assigned in the Save dialog box and add a number, beginning at 001. So, for example,
if you export sequential files with the name Untitled Sequence, Xpress Pro will name
the first exported file Untitled Sequence 001, then Untitled Sequence 002, and so on
until it finishes unloading each single frame in the marked sequence. From there, they
can be moved for whatever purpose you intend.
It’s good to remember that some file formats produce larger files than others, so
make sure that you have plenty of drive space for the export. Unlike QuickTime and
streaming media formats, in the event of a power outage, whatever individual files
were exported will be usable. Continue the export with a new mark from wherever you
left off. Or better yet, purchase an uninterruptible power supply. In the long run, you’ll
be thankful, anyway.
Exporting Audio Files
Now we will discuss the options when exporting single clips or sections of audio with-
out the complexities of needing to define your sequence, individual audio edits, and
transitions. You can create single audio files with Free DV and Xpress Pro that can be
used with a variety of applications, from the high-end audio workstations to a simple
audio application.
Xpress Pro also has the ability to export individual or entire sequences of audio
files. Select the sequence or the clip of the audio that you want to export. You’ll want
to make marks and enable tracks according to your needs.
You can select a clip, sequence, subclip, or any other form of audio media.
You can also select the audio by selecting it directly from a bin, but be mindful of the
