Expanded nesting shows you the tracks within a nest, but keeps the monitoring

the same. With expansion nesting, you still monitor the entire Timeline with effects

added, so it isn’t particularly good for closeup work within the nest. On the other

hand, expansion nesting allows you to monitor audio, patch source tracks to tracks

that exist outside of the nest, view all levels of a nest, and see the entire Timeline—not

just the element that is being affected in the nest.

These descriptions might sound a bit complicated, so let’s take a look at an

example of each method and how it can work.

Step Nesting

Here’s a simple example of a step nested effect: Suppose that you have a Picture In Pic-

ture effect in your sequence. This effect uses two tracks of video: one for the back-

ground, a wide shot of a newscaster; the other for a graphic, a map.

In this scenario, there are parts of a map that need to be identified. You decide

to add a title on track 3. So you add a track of video and build your title, and every-

thing is going just great. You might even get done early tonight, for a change. You edit

the title onto track 3 and start playing back your finished sequence. Just when it looks

like a walk in the park, you get a sinking feeling of impending doom as you realize that

you created the Picture In Picture effect transition over the shoulder of the newscaster

as a zoom from infinity to its normal size.

You enter Effect mode, scale the first keyframe of your title back to infinity, and

leave the second one in the final resting position. Another playback, another problem.
