As anyone who is a computer enthusiast knows, these recommendations fre-
quently change, so it might be a good idea to visit the Avid website at www.avid.com.
The Avid website also hosts forums for both Free DV and Xpress Pro. Here you
can ask questions and get answers from others who use these systems regularly. Both
professional and new users of the systems use the forums. It’s also a great way to meet
other editors and to trade war stories.
Now that you know the recommendations from Avid, let’s take a look at some
other important issues. Before going through the process of creating a project and digi-
tizing, it is wise to do a little planning ahead. This sort of “pre-postproduction” works
well, especially for larger projects. We talked about this in the previous chapter, but
again, I must emphasize that without doing these things, you’ll find yourself in a
pickle. A little planning can prevent mistakes down the line. Here, then, are some of
those considerations to be made:
• Do you have enough drive space to capture, import, and render media for your
entire project?
• Have you determined a system of naming each videotape for this project?
• Have you chosen a resolution for the project?
• Have you determined the final medium for the finished project?
Now we’ll take a look at each of these considerations.
Note: There are a lot of good resources for editors on the Web. Some of the best forums are at
www.editorsnet.com and www.creativecow.com.These are great sites for both new and experi-
enced editors. You can get a lot of information there and questions answered. There is also the Avid Listserv,
better known as the Avid-L.The “L”is notorious for cranky old editors and might not be the best site if you’re
new to postproduction. You can sign up for the L by going to Avid’s website and clicking the Community
button.
