CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING
To adjust input levels, select the Input tab on your Audio Project Settings window.
A slider appears. Note that the slider is set to a unity level: +0. With the audio meters on
your Capture tool open, you can adjust the audio on your source to an optimum level.
When monitoring audio input on the Audio tool, you should note that the right
side of the meter is analog VU (volume units) and the left side is digital. In the digital
domain, 0 dB is the optimum level, as we discussed. In the analog domain, the audio
can go beyond zero level to as high as +14 dB. This extra space in the analog domain is
what is referred to as headroom. Anything beyond the headroom level becomes dis-
torted, much like 0 dB in the digital domain.
If you have Mojo connected to your system, you will not be able to adjust the
audio levels. This is because Mojo will keep any incoming audio in the digital domain
and “clone” it, reproducing the exact audio recorded and played back from the tape
source. If this is a problem, you will need to use a deck where audio output levels can
be adjusted. Normally with digital audio, the rule of thumb is WYSIWYG (what you
see is what you get)—or perhaps more appropriately WYHIWYG (what you hear is
what you get).
The Audio Passthrough Mix Tool (Mojo Only)
When you capture audio, you usually want the levels to be optimum. And it’s always a
good idea to monitor it when you capture, as opposed to going out of the room and
grabbing a cup of coffee or chatting with your colleagues. When monitoring the audio,
you might want to hear how it will sound when mixed.
For example, let’s say you have a studio tape in which the announcer is on
channel 1 and a rough music mix is on channel 2. You want to capture both at solid
levels, so that you can adjust the music later, but when monitoring it, you want to be
able to pull the music down to hear what it would sound like when mixed.
For these purposes, the Audio Passthrough Mix tool (shown in Figure 2.24) was
developed.
On the Capture tool, select the button with sliders on it . (If you have Xpress
without Mojo or Free DV, this button does not exist on the Capture interface.) This is
your Audio Passthrough Mix tool. Using this tool allows you to choose between a
direct mix to channels 1 and 2 or a stereo pair. You can adjust the levels of sound
appropriately for monitoring or pan them any way you want. You can gang channels
of audio together and adjust them as a group. But nothing you do affects capturing the
media; using this tool, you can listen to the source any way you want.
Note: Another caveat when capturing audio is this:Don’t try to ride the levels.You can adjust them in a
much more precise way when editing your project by using the Audio Mix (Free DV and Xpress Pro) and
Automation Gain tools (Xpress Pro only).
