TUTORIAL: IMPORT AND EXPORT
Tone Media Frequency The tone media frequency is preset at 1000 Hz, which is the
standard for most recorded video media. However, some audio post houses prefer
using a variety of tones at different frequencies. If your digital cut is going to an audio
house for sweetening or for mixing, it’s a good idea to check with them first before
adding tone to your digital cut. You can also add a series of tones to properly identify
individual audio tracks.
Tone Media Length in Seconds This setting controls the amount of tone media created.
Sixty seconds is the default and the standard.
Number of Tracks The number of tone tracks to create should be determined. If the
output uses discrete tracks going to separate channels, tone media should be created for
each track, including stereo pairs.
If the output uses a mono output, tone should be put on only one channel. This
is done to avoid adding volume to the tone. Two tone tracks mixed together would be
additive, creating a louder tone signal than desired. If the tone is placed on a single
channel only, it will be mixed into a mono signal that registers correctly on the audio
input of the record machine.
After these items are selected in the Create Tone Media menu, you will need to
select a bin for the tone clip and a drive where the tone will be rendered.
Adding Bars
SMPTE bars, the most commonly used test pattern, is imported to Xpress Pro as a
PICT file. You can find the SMPTE bars in the
Avid\Avid Xpress Pro\Supporting
Files\Test Patterns
folder. There are several other test patterns available in this folder.
Before importing the bars, you should change your import settings so that the
right amount of media will be imported. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Go to the Project window and select the Settings tab.
2. Select Import Settings.
3. Under the Single Frame Import heading, change the number of seconds to 60.
This will add 60 seconds of bars media when the SMPTE bars are imported.
To import SMPTE bars, do the following:
1. Select a target bin for your bars clip.
