■ DIGITAL CUT
Although it looks like a direct entry box, the DV Offset is controlled through
your deck preference settings. If you do a digital cut, but the audio and video don’t
seem to be in sync, you’ll need to open your deck preferences and override the recom-
mended DV offset with a number of your choosing. The bad news about overriding
the recommended offset is that you have to determine the correct number of frames
through trial-and-error. The good news is that it should remain consistent, as long as
you use the exact same equipment. So after the settings are made, save them. An easy
way to determine the offset is to lay a sequence off to tape that consists of a few sec-
onds of filler, followed by a beep synchronized to a single frame of white or bars or
video, followed by more filler.
The rest of the Digital Cut tool should be familiar to you (we covered it in
Chapter 2). Be sure that the right deck and tape name are selected. If you are control-
ling the digital cut locally and doing a crash record, none of this is necessary. No marks
need to be in the marks register unless you are recording your digital cut at a specific
Mark In timecode. One slight difference is that there is no Mark Out button, because
the length of your sequence or marks on the sequence determines the outpoint, plus
any black filler you’ve added.
Digital Cut with Mojo
The Mojo accelerator allows a few more options when you create a digital cut. It can
work as a transcoder to Composite, Component, or S-Video analog decks. It can out-
put real-time effects. It can output uncompressed video.
The greatest advantage of a Mojo is the lack of rendering required when com-
pleting a digital cut. Although all the preparations should be completed as with a digital
cut without a Mojo, you do have the capability of playing back uncompressed video
and some real-time effects.
Once connected to your deck via FireWire from the Mojo, Xpress Pro can con-
trol the deck. The only significant difference that you will see on the Digital Cut tool
when used with Mojo is that you can enable Effects Safe mode. Effects Safe mode will
determine which effects need to be rendered before performing a digital cut. Enabling
Effects Safe mode will prevent video underruns or other playback issues. With Effects
Safe mode selected, click the Record button for the digital cut to begin. After render-
ing, the system will perform the digital cut.
Note: If you receive the error “No coincidence point found”it probably means that your deck, your tape,or
both are “write protected”or “record inhibited.”Pop or slide the record inhibit button on the tape or flip the
record inhibit switch on the deck and try again.
