EXPORTING
This is based on the presumption that you would even use a video image for
print. A more common use for exported graphics is its use in a graphic-editing applica-
tion. In some cases, you might need to export a sequence of frames for animation,
compositing, rotoscoping, or some other dynamic media imaging. Either way, Xpress
Pro and Free DV can handle these types of exports with ease.
Single-Frame Graphic Exports
Xpress Pro can export a lot of different file formats. Free DV, on the other hand
exports fewer formats. Do you Free DV people feel robbed? You shouldn’t, for three
very simple reasons:
Helloooooo? It’s called Free DV for a reason.
You can download graphic converter applications very easily from the Internet
and convert these files to just about anything.
If you really want to get crazy with graphics, there are some inexpensive graphic
converter applications that will convert to every file format known to man- and
womankind.
The first order of business is to determine which format you’ll need to export.
To see the variety of options, find the frame where you want to export. It can be from
a clip, subclip, sequence, or effect. You can export from either the Source or Record
monitors. When your Avid system exports a graphic, it chooses whichever monitor is
selected, so be sure to enable the correct one. Any frame works. After you find the
frame, place a mark in on it. The mark lets Free DV/Xpress Pro know which frame is
to be exported. From there, select File
> Export. If you have other things to do before
exporting, be sure to click on the frame before accessing this menu because the Export
menu is conditional. In other words, if you were to click on a bin, the system would
assume that you were trying to export a bin or perhaps a sequence (depending on exactly
what was clicked in the bin), but it wouldn’t know that you are trying to export a frame.
When the Export menu comes up, select the Options pull-down menu. From
here, select Graphic, and the Graphic Export menu appears. To the right of the menu
are the Use Enabled Tracks and Use Marks selectors.
Multiple-Frame Graphics Exports
Exporting a multiple-frame graphic sequence works much like exporting a single
graphic with one exception: You can create multiple individual files, one for each
frame. If you work with animators or do much rotoscoping (that is, painting frame
by frame) this is probably of common use for you. Individual frame exports can, for
some applications, be easier to work with than a QuickTime movie or other stream-
ing media. The frames need to be contiguous in the sequence to be exported in this
